Paris: French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna will join a peace summit in Cairo on the situation in the Gaza Strip, the French Foreign Ministry said.
“The minister will return to Egypt on Saturday to take part in Cairo Peace Summit that Egypt’s president [Abdel Fattah Sisi] is organizing on October 21,” the ministry said on Friday.
During the summit, Colonna will once again condemn the operation launched by Palestinian movement Hamas against Israel, call for the release of all Israeli hostages, as well as reaffirm the need to settle the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, according to the statement.
On October 7, Hamas launched a surprise large-scale rocket attack against Israel from the Gaza Strip and breached the border, killing and abducting people in neighboring Israeli communities.
Israel launched retaliatory strikes and ordered a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, home to more than 2 million people, cutting off supplies of water, food and fuel.
Thousands of dead and injured have been reported on both sides as a result of the escalation.
