Imphal: The 24th National Fish Farmers Day was celebrated at the Directorate of Fisheries in Lamphelpat, Imphal West, on Wednesday, recognizing the significant contributions of fish farmers and their commitment to sustainable aquaculture. The Directorate of Fisheries, Government of Manipur, organized the event.

This annual celebration highlights fish farmers’ vital role in the fisheries sector, contributing to food security and meeting the growing demand for fish protein. Fish farming generates employment and harnesses the vast potential of the fishery sector, promising a prosperous future for the region.

Addressing the gathering, M.H. Khan, Special Chief Secretary for Forest, RD & PR, TA & Hills, Government of Manipur, emphasized that fishery is the future of Manipur’s economy. He noted that the previous shortage in fish production has been overcome thanks to the dedication of the state’s fish farmers and the adoption of modern technologies. These efforts have also been crucial in preserving the indigenous Sareng fish.

Khan highlighted the significant role of Andhra Pradesh and other South Indian states in fish production. He mentioned a proposed action plan by the Chief Minister of Manipur in 2020, developed in collaboration with the Central Agricultural University (CAU), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and other experts, aimed at addressing the fish production gap in Manipur.

He emphasized the socio-economic dependency of the state on fishery activities and discussed the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) introduced by the Government of India for fish sector development. He also called for collaboration between the Fisheries Department and other departments like Agriculture, Horticulture, Forest and Environment, and Climate Change to improve, preserve, and produce indigenous fish varieties.

Khan urged the introduction of more training programs for fish farmers and capacity-building initiatives for related staff to enhance fishery activities.

H. Balkrishna Singh, Director of Fisheries, Manipur, acknowledged the achievements of the state’s fish farmers in overcoming challenges and achieving sustainable aquaculture. He noted the recent functioning of hatchery farms and assured continuous support from the Department of Fisheries.

The event also featured the felicitation of six successful fish farmers promoting Sareng, who shared their experiences. Neeta Arambam, Secretary MPSC, and Special Secretary (Fishery), Government of Manipur, was also present at the celebration.
