Bengaluru: The Congress party on Saturday announced the first list of 124 candidates for the upcoming Karnataka assembly elections this year.
The party has fielded former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah from Varuna assembly seat, and Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar from Kanakapura.
Earlier, Siddaramaiah had expressed his desire to contest from Kolar, but the Congress High Command asked him to fight the election from Varuna after the local party leaders in the district disagreed on the former CM’s candidature.
The party has fielded M Roopakala from the Kolar Gold Field constituency.
Former ministers G Parameshwara and KH Muniyappa have been fielded from Koratagere (SC) and Devanahalli constituencies. And, Priyanka Kharge, son of AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, has been fielded from Chitapur (SC).
The party’s central election committee, on March 17, cleared the first list of candidates after a meeting in Delhi, which was presided over by Kharge and was attended by Rahul Gandhi.
The Election Commission of India is yet to announce the itinerary of the assembly elections in the state. The term of the present government ends in May.
