Puducherry: A 19-year-old engineering student, hailing from Andhra Pradesh, drowned in the sea on Sunday last.
Police said the deceased was identified as Neeraj Reddy from Nellore and a third-year student of the Pondicherry Engineering College. He along with six of his friends went to Chinnaveerampatinam near here and had a bath in the sea.
When they were taking bath, a huge wave dragged them away into the sea and fishermen from the area rescued all except Neeraj.
A search operation was carried out for Neeraj by police and fire service personnel and they abandoned it after the incident as they could not locate him.
The search operation continued on the second day on Monday and even then he could not be traced.
Meanwhile, Neeraj’s body washed ashore near Chinnaveerampatinam Estuary late last night.
Police seized the body and sent it for post-mortem.
