Driver killed as Bailey Bridge Collapses in Imphal River

Three passengers managed to jump out of the vehicle, but the driver could not escape and remained trapped in his seat.

Imphal: In a shocking incident, one person was killed and three others were seriously injured when a Bailey bridge over the Imphal River collapsed early Sunday morning while a truck was crossing it.

Police reported that the bridge was located between Irong and Mutum Phibou. The six-wheeler Tata truck was carrying four people, including the driver, at the time of the incident.

Three passengers managed to jump out of the vehicle, but the driver was unable to escape and remained trapped in his seat.

Later in the evening, police and local volunteers retrieved the body after the truck was lifted from the river using heavy machinery. The bridge is believed to have collapsed under the weight of the heavy Tata truck.

The driver, identified as Dolaipabam Md Borajao, 45, son of Md Ibocha from Mayang Imphal Yangbi, did not survive. The three other passengers are currently receiving treatment at RIMS Hospital in Imphal.

Meanwhile, Wangoi police station has registered a case into the incident and started investigation. All local MLAs, along with civil and police officials, rushed to the site and began their inspection.

Locals reported that this was the third time the bridge had collapsed.
