Imphal: In celebration of the 70th Wildlife Week, the Wildlife Wing of the Forest Department, in collaboration with the Central Forest Division, organized an energetic cycle rally on Sunday, aimed at raising awareness about wildlife conservation and environmental protection.

The event drew more than 210 cyclists of all ages, including students from MAMBA, the Department of Zoology at Manipur University, DM College, a team of RIMS doctors, and groups such as Doctors on Pedal and Team 195 bpm. Participants also included the Registrar General of the High Court of Manipur, DLOs from Imphal East and West, and government officials.

Longjam Joykumar, Chief Conservator of Forests for the Government of Manipur, flagged off the rally. The primary objective was to highlight the importance of safeguarding wildlife and preserving natural habitats.

The cyclists covered an 18-kilometer route, starting from the Manipur Forest Training School in Luwangshangbam and ending at the Manipur Zoological Garden in Iroisemba. Along the way, they passed through Minuthong, Hatta, Sanjenthong, and the Kangla Western Gate, spreading messages about wildlife conservation and sustainable living. All participants took a pledge to advocate for the protection of wildlife.

During his address, Joykumar stated, “This rally reminds us that wildlife is an essential part of our ecosystem, and we all have a responsibility to protect it.” His words emphasized the significance of the event in cultivating a sense of communal duty toward wildlife protection. Shri Sanajaoba Singh, Conservator of Forests for the Southern Circle, also highlighted the role of youth in safeguarding wildlife during his speech.

Wildlife Week, observed across India from October 2nd to 8th each year, engages citizens in activities that underscore the importance of conserving the country’s rich wildlife heritage. This year, the cycle rally was a key feature of the 70th Wildlife Week celebrations, aligning with the Fit India Movement initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Forest Department expressed its sincere gratitude to all participants, volunteers, the Police Department, Traffic SP, CMO/IE&IW, and other partners who contributed to the success of the event. Their dedication to wildlife conservation is crucial for ensuring a sustainable future for the environment.

By fostering awareness and encouraging active participation, the rally not only honored the essence of Wildlife Week but also inspired collective efforts toward environmental stewardship. Additional activities are scheduled throughout the week to further engage the community in conservation efforts, reinforcing the message that protecting wildlife is a shared responsibility.
