Imphal: A CRPF soldier was killed and two Manipur police officers were injured when unidentified gunmen ambushed them in Manipur’s Jiribam district on Monday morning.
The incident occurred around 9 am while a combined team of Manipur police and CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) was conducting checks and area domination in Mongbung village under the Jiribam police station.
According to police officials, the team was heavily fired upon with sophisticated weapons by suspected Kuki militants from multiple directions.
During the 15-20 minute gunfight, CRPF driver Ajoy Kumar Jha, 43, from Maghupur, Madhubani, Bihar, was killed by bullet injuries. Manipur police officers SI K Romendro and Rifleman Robindro sustained splinter injuries and were evacuated to Jiribam Hospital for medical treatment. They are reported to be out of danger.
Reinforcements led by senior officials rushed to the site, and a combing operation is ongoing to apprehend the culprits involved in the incident.
The police department is closely monitoring the situation, with senior officers in the district to supervise security arrangements and ongoing operations.
CM Biren Condemns
Meanwhile, Chief Minister N Biren Singh strongly condemned the killing of the CRPF personnel in the attack, suspected to be carried out by Kuki militants.
“His supreme sacrifice in the line of duty shall not go in vain. I further extend my sincere condolences to the bereaved family of the deceased soldier, while praying for the speedy recovery of the ones injured during the attack,” Biren Singh wrote on his X handle.
Five KCP (Nongdrenkhomba) Cadres Arrested
In a separate incident, Manipur police foiled an extortion attempt on Monday and arrested five cadres of the KCP Nongdrenkhomba Group along with arms and ammunition in Kakching Khunou. The arrested cadres are:

- Soibam Manoj Singh (27)
- Heisnam Dipak Meitei (39)
- Nameirakpam Nelson Singh (20)
- Nongthombam Leishemba (23)
Police recovered and seized two pistols, each with one magazine loaded with five live rounds, three mobile phones, three camouflage outfits, and one Bolero vehicle without a number plate. A case has been registered for further investigation.
