Agartala: Rajya Sabha MP from Communist Party of India (CPI) Sandosh Kumar on Tuesday wrote to Chief Election Commissioner of India seeking his instruction to Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Tripura to take necessary steps to ensure a free, and fair election to Tripura assembly scheduled on February 16.
He alleged that attacks and violence on CPI workers in the Santirbazar assembly constituency of South Tripura by ruling BJP cadres have been continuing for the last few days where the CPI candidate Satyajit Reang is contesting the election as a nominee of Left Front and Congress.
The matter was brought to the notice of the CEO with specific instances but no action is taken and violence continues, which raised a question of whether people would be able to exercise their franchise.
“The BJP workers are attacking our party workers and houses of the designated polling and counting agents of CPI candidate and there is an apprehension that the BJP cadres may resort to widespread violence and prevent our voters from reaching polling booths by threatening them,” the letter alleged.
The CPI(M) and Congress have also moved to ECI with the same complaints against the BJP. They alleged, amid high-security blanket and prohibitory orders across the state, the ruling party cadres have continued attacks, threats, and intimidation to the voters in the constituencies of Udaipur, Belonia, Sonamura, Bishalgarh, Agartala, Mohanpur, Jirania, Khowai, and Dharmanagar sub-divisions.
