COCOMI urges Manipur Guv to order probe into crimes against women

Imphal: Representatives of the Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), Women Wing called on Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan on Thursday and urged her to probe the atrocities committed on Meira Paibis (women activists) by central security forces on August 3.

They also submitted a memorandum requesting the Governor to take up necessary steps to investigate the incident in which around 90 women suffered injuries. They also condemned the rape of a woman from Khumujamba Meitei, Churachandpur and requested expediting the probe. 

They also requested the Governor to take up all necessary steps to restore normalcy and peace at the earliest possible time. Governor assured them that she will ask the concerned authorities about the incident. She informed them that efforts are on to bring back normalcy and peace.

Sandeep Datta, IG, CRPF, Manipur & Nagaland Sector apprised the Governor of the security situation in the State. Governor appreciated the efforts put in by CRPF, especially during the last three months and asked to lend support further in bringing normalcy and peace. 

She asked the IG to distribute utility boxes to the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) staying at Biramangol College relief camp in Imphal East district and the IG assured that the same will be distributed to the IDPs on her behalf.

Dr. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and Dr. Sanjeev Nepram, Medical Superintendent briefed the Governor about the various developmental projects being taken up in the Institute. About 90 operations and more than 300 free medical treatments were given to the affected victims of the violence. 

The issue of students from hill areas studying in RIMS was also discussed and the Director informed the Governor that a proposal has already been sent to the concerned ministry to accommodate them in medical institutes in Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram and a response is still awaited. Governor appreciated the efforts of doctors, nurses and staff of RIMS in extending their support to the needy people of the State.

Kulwant Singh Cheema , transporter apprised of the problems faced by the transporters in the State. He also expressed his willingness to extend support in resolving the crisis in the State.
