Agartala: Concerned with the post-poll violence across Tripura, intellectuals and civil society members here on Thursday appealed to political parties, Election Commission of India (ECI), and police to ensure a full stop in the violence of any sort whoever wins or loses.
Despite the sincere efforts of ECI, Tripura registered a large number of violent attacks in one week after the polling was over, which left a person killed, 134 injured, several houses gutted.
As a result of post-poll violence after the Tripura assembly elections on February 16, huge properties and valuables of supporters of different parties were also damaged.
In a letter to Chief Secretary J K Sinha, CEO Kiran Gitte, and DGP Amitabha Ranjan, the civil society members expressed serious concern over the incidents when the election this year was almost violence-free and peaceful.
It urged the administration to take action against such barbaric acts and to devise a proactive mechanism for restraining any such attempt at any level.
They suggested a collective pledge to build a beautiful state free of violence and appeal to all to ensure the safety of the common people in their respective areas and all the organizations that maintain law and order, the letter reads, apprehending more violence after the declaration of election results.
“This is not only telling upon socio-economic peace and harmony but is also acting as a major impediment to the development and welfare of people besides tagging a bad name, for Tripura before the global community when the people showcased their democratic maturity by casting 90 per cent vote,” said Retd Justice A B Paul.
