Shillong:  Congress leader and former Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister, Sachin Pilot, exuded confidence on Tuesday that his party will secure an absolute majority in the Meghalaya elections, asserting that the “double-engine government” of the combined National People’s Party (NPP) and BJP have failed to deliver to the people of the state.

“The people of Meghalaya believe in and trust the Congress Party. The Congress is the only viable alternative for Meghalaya. We are sure about an absolute victory in Meghalaya,” Pilot told reporters.

Alleging that the level of corruption of the NPP-led MDA government, of which the BJP is a partner, has been “unprecedented,”  the Congress leader said, “Because of the corruption at every level of governance, employment opportunities in the state have been destroyed, and the hopes and aspirations of the youth of Meghalaya have been dashed to the ground.”

“BJP today stands exposed. They were in power in Delhi and in alliance in Meghalaya in what they refer to as a “double engine government,” but have failed to deliver. Price rise, unemployment continue to be major issues in Meghalaya and the country. What stopped the BJP and the MDA government from addressing these issues? “What prevented them from establishing more industries, factories, manufacturing hubs, and creating jobs in Meghalaya?” Pilot added.

“The NPP led MDA government and their alliance partner, the BJP, have a lot to answer to the people of Meghalaya on the high rates of unemployment faced by the youth of Meghalaya. Both the NPP and BJP manifestos for 2023 have promised jobs for the youth, but what were they both doing during the last five years,” he questioned.

Stating that the BJP and NPP are only interested in staying in power through the politics of manoeuvring, Pilot said, “I am confident that the people of Meghalaya can see through this and are aware and politically conscious to use their wisdom on February 27, when the state goes to vote. “

Pilot stated that based on Congress’ track record, both at the state and federal levels, governments have always kept their promises. “Congress has a long history of commitment and performance. We intend to keep the promises made in our manifesto,” he said.

Moreover, with the Congress having fielded young and fresh candidates, which include many women candidates, the Congress leader said, “This fresh team under the leadership of Vincent Pala will bring good governance to the state. The congress gives opportunities to young people, as seen from the 47 young candidates who are contesting from the congress party.”
