Lucknow: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates Dharmendra Singh Sainthwar and Nirmala Paswan and Samajwadi Party’s Kirti Kol on Monday filed nomination papers for by-elections for two seats of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was present when the BJP nominees file the nominations. Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak claimed that both the BJP candidates will win with a thumping majority.
Kirti Kol also filed her nomination. Kol contested the assembly election from the Chhanbey seat in the Mirzapur district on an SP ticket.
Monday is the last date for filing nominations for the by-poll to be held on August 11.
One of the two seats fell vacant following the demise of SP’s Ahmad Hassan, who was also the leader of the opposition in the upper house. The second seat fell vacant after Thakur Jaiveer Singh resigned on being elected to the assembly.
