Ban on mobile internet services in peripheral areas extended for another 15 days in Manipur

Earlier, the State Government by an order issued on January 17, 2024, banned the mobile internet service in the above-mentioned areas till February 1, 2024, given the prevailing law and order situation.

Imphal: The Manipur government has extended the suspension of mobile internet services in the 2km stretch along the adjoining areas of nine districts for another 15 days.

The ban will extended to adjoining districts of Chandel and Kakching; Churachandpur and Bishnupur; Kangpokpi and Imphal West; Kangpokpi and Imphal East; Kangpokpi and Thoubal; and Tengnoupal and Kakching district till 7.45 pm of February 16, a statement issued by the State home department said on Friday. 

Earlier, the State Government by an order issued on January 17, 2024, banned the mobile internet service in the above-mentioned areas till February 1, 2024, given the prevailing law and order situation.

The order directed all mobile service providers to ensure compliance and requested all internet users to refrain from activities that may cause situations that would warrant the suspension of internet services in the future.

The mobile internet services were first banned in the state for nearly eight months after ethnic violence broke out between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo communities in the first week of May last year.

Assam Rifles foils cross-border smuggling 

Imphal: The troops of Assam Rifles intercepted a total of thirteen trucks that were involved in the illegal transportation of Areca nut, lacking the necessary valid documentation. The intercepted goods were evidently intended for unauthorized distribution within the black market.

Upon thorough inspection, the search operation resulted in a significant seizure, encompassing 1337 bags of Areca/ Betel Nuts, weighing approximately 113.52 tons and valued at Rs. 13.6224 Crore. These confiscated goods were handed over to the Forest Beat Officer of Kamjong District.

 This successful operation not only curtailed illegal activities but also underscored the commitment to upholding legal and ethical standards in the region, according to a press note of the PRO, IGAR(S).
