Churachandpur: The Churachandpur District Administration organised an awareness campaign on Har Ghar Jal & Water Conservation at DTC Hall, DC Office, Churachandpur as a part of the ongoing celebration of the four years of the Biren Singh-led government. Thangboi Gangte, ADC Churachandpur administered the water pledge of Har Ghar Jal to the gathering.
Speaking as the chief guest, Addl Chief Secretary (TA & Hills) Govt of Manipur, Letkhogin Haokip, said that Manipur is a much better place than other Indian states on many fronts including the availability of water. He recalled his experience in some other states where water is so scarce that it is being drawn from a well of 30-40 feet deep using a rope that is tied to a cow which pulled the water from the wells.
He, however, cautioned that Churachandpur district would face extreme water scarcity problem after 3/4 decades if cutting down of trees continues. Stating that trees or green environment plays an important role in the conservation of water, Letkhogin Haokip urged all concerned to plant more trees to avert impending water scarcity problem.
DC Churachandpur, PawanYadav, while highlighting the achievements of the PHED in the district said Churachandpur District was declared ODF on August 11, 2018. The PHED department has taken steps to have the ODF sign in each and every village, added the DC. He said that a drive was also taken against single-use plastic with successful impact with Churachandpur District collecting maximum weight of plastic. With the help of CEO/ADCC the plastic was lifted by NHIDCL which will be used in the construction of roads. He further stated that the project taken up by NESIDS under NEC inaugurated in August 2020 covered 24 square km, providing 2000 household tap connection with the target completion of 2 years and the department completed in one and half year.
Jal Jeevan Mission will also provide a tap connection to each household in rural areas and targeting completion by 2024 with the Govt of Manipur planning to complete the target by 2022, the PHED department is taking an active step towards achieving the target, said the DC.
John Thanglenmang Singson, EE, PHED in his opening remarks stated that Jal Jeevan Mission aims to focus on good quality water in adequate quantity. Highlighting the steps taken up by the department, he urged all to join hands against illegal activities, spread awareness to conserve water and protect water resources.
SDOs, DLOs and Officials from Police Department also attended the programme.
Similar programmes were also held at the block level.
