Canberra: Australia on Monday said it has initiated joint legal action, along with the Netherlands, against Russia over the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in 2014.
The two countries have taken the case to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
Russia is believed to be responsible under international law for the downing of the flight.
This action by Australia and Netherlands in a specialised organisation of the United Nations is a step towards the fight for ensuring justice for 298 victims.
The victims include 38 Australians as well, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Foreign Minister Marise Payne said in a statement.Â
