Assam Rifles hosts cancer awareness programme on world cancer day at Pallel Garrison

Kakching: Assam Rifles organised a cancer awareness programme at the Sangai Auditorium, Pallel Garrison, Kakching District on 04 February 2026 to mark World Cancer Day. The initiative was aimed at educating and sensitising families of personnel and the local civilian population, including women from all communities, on cancer prevention, early detection and timely treatment. 

The programme was aligned with the World Cancer Day theme, “United by Unique”, highlighting a people-centred approach to cancer care that values individual experiences while uniting communities in the shared goal of reducing the cancer burden. 

Prof. (Dr.) Thaodem Tomcha Singh, Senior Radiation Oncologist at the American Oncology Institute, Imphal, with over four decades of distinguished service in oncology, shared insights on cancer risk factors, preventive strategies, the importance of early screening and advances in modern treatment modalities. A pioneer of postgraduate radiotherapy training in North East India and former Head of the Department of Radiotherapy and Regional Cancer Centre, RIMS, Prof. Singh has contributed extensively to research, medical education and cancer care in the region. 

Adding a deeply human dimension, Mrs. Arpita Chowdhury, wife of a senior official of Assam Rifles and a cancer survivor, shared her personal journey of resilience and recovery, inspiring participants with her experience. Informative pamphlets on cancer awareness, early warning signs, preventive measures and available screening facilities were distributed. 

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from over 80 attendees, including officials, troops, families and civilians including 45 women from all communities, reflecting strong community engagement. Assam Rifles continues to reaffirm its commitment to the well-being of personnel, their families and local communities, contributing meaningfully to public health education and welfare in remote areas of Manipur.

Assam Rifles concludes vocational tailoring training for widows of ex-servicemen in Ukhrul district

Assam Rifles successfully concluded a Vocational Tailoring Training Programme for widows of Assam Rifles Ex-Servicemen at Ukhrul District, Manipur, on 04 February 2026. The initiative was organised as part of the Assam Rifles Civic Action Programme and was attended by officials and troops of the force. 

The training programme, conducted from 07 January to 03 February 2026, provided structured, hands-on instruction in tailoring skills. Professional instructors from the civil sector imparted training in basic and advanced tailoring techniques, garment construction and the operation and maintenance of sewing equipment. A total of 25 widows of Ex-Servicemen and Assam Rifles personnel from the Ukhrul region participated in the course. 

The programme aimed to equip participants with employable vocational skills to enable sustainable livelihood opportunities and financial self-reliance. During the interaction, the senior official of Assam Rifles emphasised the importance of skill development, dignity of labour and self-reliance, reiterating the organisation’s commitment to the welfare of veterans’ families and women empowerment initiatives. Certificates were distributed to all participants upon successful completion of the training. 

Such initiatives reflect Assam Rifles’ continued efforts towards community outreach, civil–military cooperation and socio-economic upliftment of vulnerable sections of society in Manipur, reaffirming its role in fostering welfare and empowerment in remote regions.

Assam Rifles organised friendly volleyball match to promote women’s empowerment and community engagement Ukhrul

Assam Rifles organised a friendly volleyball match between Riflewomen and young women from Shakpao Youth Club at the garrison in Shakpao Village, Ukhrul District. The event was held in a spirited and community-oriented atmosphere, reinforcing the values of sportsmanship, empowerment and civil–military cooperation. 

The match drew enthusiastic participation from the local community, with around 60 villagers, including elders, youth and children, attending. Their presence added vibrancy to the occasion and highlighted the strong bond between Assam Rifles and the people of Shakpao. The sporting contest provided a constructive platform for young women to showcase their athletic abilities, while also promoting physical fitness and instilling values of teamwork, discipline, leadership and fair play. 

Following the match, members of the Shakpao Youth Club team were felicitated by the senior official of the Assam Rifles in recognition of their enthusiasm and sporting spirit. The post-match interaction further strengthened camaraderie, mutual respect and trust between Riflewomen and the young women of the village. 

The initiative carried particular significance in the present context of Manipur, where such engagements foster social harmony, gender equality and youth empowerment. By encouraging participation and dialogue through sport, Assam Rifles continues to nurture positive community relations and resilience in the region.
