Imphal: In a significant outreach aimed at strengthening trust and preventing further tensions, the Assam Rifles on Saturday held a series of security coordination meetings with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and village authorities from the Naga and Kuki communities.
The initiative follows allegations from certain quarters over the handling of the Litan incident. Responding through direct engagement, the force sought to dispel concerns, reaffirm neutrality and promote constructive dialogue at a sensitive juncture in the state.
The first meeting, held at Shalluk in Chandel District, brought together representatives of eight Naga CSOs and seven Kuki CSOs. The interaction, described as open and candid, focused on confidence-building measures, addressing security apprehensions and ensuring transparent communication between communities and security agencies.
In an official statement, the force emphasised unity, restraint and coordinated action to counter misinformation and prevent escalation. CSO representatives shared their concerns and recommendations, highlighting the need for sustained engagement and collective responsibility to restore normalcy and strengthen inter-community harmony.
Subsequent meetings were conducted at Chassad and Somsai in Ukhrul district and Kamjong district, focusing on the situation in Litan and adjoining areas. Representatives from five Kuki CSOs, seven Naga CSOs, along with village authorities and community leaders, participated in the discussions. Deliberations centred on preventing escalation, curbing rumours, improving coordination mechanisms and ensuring the safety of innocent civilians.
Community leaders underscored the importance of trust and continued communication, assuring their cooperation in maintaining peace and discouraging activities that could disturb stability.
Reiterating its commitment to impartiality and humanitarian principles, the Assam Rifles affirmed that safeguarding all communities without discrimination remains its foremost priority. The meetings concluded on a constructive note, with stakeholders collectively pledging to uphold peace, security and development in the region.
