Imphal: Assam Rifles, under the aegis of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (South), conducted a series of solemn wreath-laying ceremonies on October 3 and 4, 2024 to honour the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
On October 3, 2024, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at Mantripukhri, Imphal East district, in remembrance of Rifleman (General Duty) Late Om Bahadur Sunar of 4 Assam Rifles. Rifleman Sunar displayed exemplary bravery on October 3, 1996, during a Road Opening Party duty near Molvailup, Manipur. While under heavy insurgent fire, he retaliated fiercely, but tragically sustained fatal injuries. His courage and sacrifice were commemorated with wreaths laid by two officers, four Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs), and 42 other ranks of Assam Rifles.
A day later, on October 4, 2024, Assam Rifles held two more ceremonies. The first, at Modi, Chandel District, honored Naik Tara Singh, who courageously gave his life while neutralising terrorists at Lalpura, Kupwara, Jammu & Kashmir, on October 4, 1995. His unwavering courage and commitment in the face of enemy fire were remembered by all present.
Simultaneously, at Mantripukhri, Assam Rifles paid homage to Naik (General Duty) Late Samu Singh of 4 Assam Rifles, who laid down his life on October 4, 1962 while on Road Opening Party duty at Tadubi-Imphal Road, Manipur. In a fierce firefight with insurgents, Naik Singh exhibited extraordinary valor, retaliating with force before succumbing to his injuries.
Across these ceremonies, officers, JCOs, and soldiers stood united in their tribute to these brave souls, reflecting the enduring legacy of selflessness and patriotism within the Assam Rifles, stated a press note from the PRO, IGAR(S).
