Kakching: Assam Rifles undertook a meaningful initiative to empower women by distributing two manual weaving looms to ten women from Sugnu and Serou, who were displaced during the ethnic clashes of 2023. The looms were handed over by the Commander, 28 Sector Assam Rifles, in a programme designed to promote self-reliance, sustainable livelihood opportunities and preservation of Manipur’s rich handloom traditions.
The beneficiaries, all Internally Displaced Persons, received the looms with great appreciation, recognising the opportunity to rebuild their lives through weaving. To further support their economic independence, orders for traditional textiles including Crochets, Lengyan Phei and Phanek were placed, ensuring that the women could immediately begin productive work. The initiative not only provided a source of income but also encouraged the continuation of age-old weaving practices that form an integral part of Manipur’s cultural identity. The interaction with the women offered valuable insight into their aspirations and livelihood needs, while reinforcing the importance of community support in times of adversity. By enabling the women to utilise their skills productively, the programme highlighted the role of education, tradition and enterprise in fostering resilience and self-sufficiency. The event reflected the deep impact of such initiatives in strengthening communities and preserving cultural heritage, while offering displaced families a renewed sense of dignity and purpose
