Imphal: Assam Rifles commemorated World Earth Day on 22 April 2026 by spearheading a series of community-driven environmental initiatives across the border villages of Chandel and Kamjong districts in Manipur. Under the global theme of “Planet vs. Plastics”, the events were designed to foster environmental stewardship and promote sustainable living practices at the grassroots level.
In Chandel district, comprehensive programmes were organised in Sajik Tampak, Old Samtal, New Samtal, Aibol Joupi, Kovang, Mombi and Molcham. The initiatives witnessed a turnout of 152 villagers who joined Assam Rifles personnel in cleanliness drives and interactive sessions focused on natural resource conservation. To engage the younger generation, a painting competition was held at Molcham, while a poster awareness campaign at prominent village locations sparked dialogue on climate resilience. Demonstrating a practical commitment to ecological balance, a tree plantation drive was conducted at St. Mary’s School in Sajik Tampak, where students and staff assisted in planting 15 saplings.
The momentum continued in Kamjong district with simultaneous plantation drives in Molvailup, Phaimol and Kangpat Khullen. Local primary school students, teachers, village authorities and youth worked alongside the troops to enhance the region’s green cover. These collective efforts aimed to mitigate soil erosion and improve air quality, reinforcing the shared responsibility of protecting the local ecosystem. By providing necessary tools and saplings, Assam Rifles ensured the long-term impact of these activities, successfully interweaving civil-military cooperation with the vital cause of environmental preservation for a healthier future.
