Imphal: Litan, a small town situated along the Imphal–Ukhrul road in Manipur, was engulfed by ethnic tension between the Tangkhul and Kuki communities on Sunday evening, resulting in significant damage to property and heightened security concerns.
An incident on 8 February 2026 led to the burning of more than twenty houses and other structures, leaving the locality shaken and residents in fear.
In response to the developments, Deputy Chief Minister Lusii Dikho, along with senior officials from the Ukhrul and Kamjong districts, held a high-level review meeting at Litan Police Station. Kimneo Haokip Hangshing, MLA of the Saikul Assembly Constituency, also attended the meeting.
Although the precise cause of the incident has not been officially disclosed, authorities have deployed additional security personnel in and around Litan to prevent further escalation and ensure the maintenance of law and order.
Officials confirmed that no casualties have been reported so far, even as investigations are underway and security agencies remain on high alert.
Meanwhile, the Ukhrul district administration has imposed a curfew in the affected area as a precautionary measure. This reporter witnessed sounds of automatic gunfire and rifle shots, prompting many villagers to hurriedly pack their belongings and move to safer locations.
