Imphal: As part of its ongoing efforts to promote sports and fitness within the local community, the Indian Army, is organizing the ‘Major Bob Khating Football Tournament’ at Turf Football Ground in Senapati District of Manipur, from January 10 to 15, 2025.
The tournament is held in memory of the late Major Ralengnao ‘Bob’ Khating, Padma Shri, MC, MBE. He was born on February 28, 1912 in Ukhrul, Manipur. Major Khathing is remembered for his significant contributions as an Indian soldier and civil servant, particularly for his role in integrating Tawang into the Indian Union, for which he was awarded Padma Shri in 1957.
The tournament features 16 Senapati and neighbouring teams competing in various age groups. The competition is played under the Elimination Format i.e., for the first three days league matches will be played, followed by the Quarterfinals on 13 January, the Semifinals on 14 January, and the Final game and closing ceremony will be held on 15 January 2025.
The opening ceremony was held on January 10, 2025, was attended by local dignitaries and Army personnel. The event featured a Tangkhul Cultural Dance performance by a local troupe and a Football Skills Show by local children from the Hills Academy of Football.
This initiative is designed to foster community spirit, sportsmanship, and fitness among the youth of Senapati District, highlighting the Indian Army’s commitment to promoting harmony and development in the region under Operation Sadbhavana, stated a press note from the PRO Defence, Manipur, Nagaland and Southern Arunachal Pradesh.
