Birth centenary celebration of RK Kamaljit Singha held

Imphal: The Directorate of Information and Public Relations, in collaboration with the Rajarshi Bhagyachandra Cultural Foundation Manipur, Sahitya Thoupang Lup, and Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Tripura, jointly commemorated the birth centenary of the late R.K. Kamaljit Singha from Tripura. The event took place on Sunday at the Directorate’s auditorium.

The ceremony was graced by distinguished guests including M. Joy Singh, IAS Commissioner of IPR and Art & Culture, L. Birmangal Singha, President of the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Tripura, G. Ranjit Sharma, Vice President of the Rajarshi Bhagyachandra Cultural Foundation Manipur, and Saratchand Thiyam, a Sahitya Akademi Awardee.

As Chief Guest, M. Joy Singh spoke of R.K. Kamaljit Singha’s significant contributions, describing him as a “renowned and multifaceted personality.” He emphasized that “culture has existed since the dawn of mankind, and the relationship between humanity and culture is inseparable.”

He also highlighted the inclusion of Manipur’s “Nat Sankirtan” in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on December 4, 2013. Additionally, he shared that the Department of Art & Culture, through the Sangeet Natak Akademi, recently proposed “Lai Haraoba” for UNESCO recognition on October 14, 2024.

Notably, the late Rajkumar Kamaljit Singha played a pivotal role in founding the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Tripura in 1963 as its first Secretary. He served as a member of the Tripura Territorial Council in 1963 and became an MLA in the 1967 Tripura Legislative Assembly. Kamaljit Singha also authored numerous books and contributed to various organizations throughout his career.

A book on R.K. Kamaljit Singha, written by his son R.K. Tarunjit, Joint Editor (Marup) Tripura, was released during the function. The event concluded with a poetry recitation session chaired by Dilip Mayengbam, former Director of AIR Imphal, featuring 30 poets, including seven from Tripura
