Churachandpur: Joining the nation in celebrating 78 years of India’s Independence, Churachandpur marked the occasion with a district-level program at Peace Ground, Tuibong. The event was led by Deputy Commissioner Dharun Kumar S, who hoisted the National Flag and received the Rashtriya Salute as the Chief Guest from the 25 parade contingents, commanded by SDPO Thomas Haokip.
In his address, Dharun Kumar S paid homage to the nation’s freedom fighters, acknowledging their sacrifices in shaping India’s rich history, culture, and achievements. He announced the upcoming inauguration of a new computer center in the district, which will enable online examinations for students starting this year.
“As your District Magistrate, I assure you that the administration is dedicated to ensuring justice, security, and development for all. We will continue to promote understanding, dialogue, and build a future where every citizen feels safe, valued, and respected,” the Deputy Commissioner said.

Highlighting the district’s recent advancements, he mentioned that complete blood hemogram machines have been installed at PHC Thanlon and CHC Singhat, and the e-hospital program’s “Scan and Share OPD” has been launched. He also noted that despite the challenges, Churachandpur is managing the largest number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) across 93 relief camps. The district administration, in collaboration with civil society organizations, has been providing compassionate support to those displaced.
Dharun Kumar S urged all officials, Civil Society Organizations, and the people of Churachandpur to continue supporting government agencies in their efforts to improve the well-being of citizens. He called on the community to uphold the values of justice, equality, and democracy, and to honor the sacrifices of the forefathers by building a Churachandpur everyone can take pride in.
The celebration featured cultural performances by different communities, including a bamboo dance by the Hmar Youth Association (HYA). In recognition of exemplary public service, the Chief Guest presented appreciation certificates to 107 government employees, institutions, and individuals/NGOs. Special certificates were also awarded to 10 schools that provided shelter to IDPs.

As part of the event, the district administration organized a mass pledge-taking ceremony against drug abuse under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA). ADC Thangboi Gangte led the participants in taking an oath to combat drug abuse and work towards a drug-free society.
