It may be mentioned that the former Khonsa West MLA Yumsen Matey was gunned down by unknown assailant(s) on December 16 at the bordering Raho village in Tirap district along the Indo-Myanmar border where he had gone for some personal work.

The shocking incident had evoked strong condemnation from across the state’s top political leadership.

The opposition Congress besides denouncing the ex-MLA’s killing had demanded a high-level probe into alleged repeated killings of leaders of Tirap district either by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or the National Investigation Agency (NIA). It had also urged the Centre to bring a permanent solution to the insurgency problem of the Tirap-Changlang-Longding (TCL) region.

Late Yumsem Matey, a politician from Lazu village in Tirap district and the first graduate from the Ollo community, served as a Member of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Khonsa West seat.

Elected as an MLA from the Indian National Congress in 2009, he held the post of Parliamentary Secretary for Women & Social Welfare, Social Justice and Tribal Affairs, and DoTCL (Department of Tirap, Changlang and Longding Affairs).
