Former Arunachal MLA killed along Indo-Myanmar border

Yumsen Matey, who had gone to Raho village (under Lazu circle in Tirap district) for his personal work, was ‘taken’ towards a jungle, leaving his workers behind and killed.

Itanagar: In a sensational incident, a former legislator of Tirap district was assassinated by the unidentified assailant(s) at a far-flung village in the southern Arunachal Pradesh district along the Indo-Myanmar border on Saturday.

Sources said that the former MLA of Khonsa West constituency, Yumsen Matey, who had gone to Raho village (under Lazu circle in Tirap district) for his personal work, was ‘taken’ towards a jungle, leaving his workers behind and killed. The perpetrators are believed to have fled toward Myanmar.

“It is learned that an ex-MLA from 56 Khonsa West Constituency, Yumsen Matey, has been killed by an unknown person. The place of occurrence is near Raho village in Lazu Circle. He had gone to Raho village for his personal work with his three workers when an unknown person took Matey alone towards a jungle, leaving his workers behind. After around 30 minutes, workers heard a gunshot. The incident happened around 2 pm. An FIR is being registered in Lazu PS. Further details are awaited,” a senior official in the Arunachal Pradesh Police Department said.

Yumsem Matey, a politician from Lazu village in Tirap district and the first graduate from the Ollo community, served as a member of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Khonsa West seat.

Elected as an MLA from the Indian National Congress in 2009, he held the posts of Parliamentary Secretary for Women & Social Welfare, Social Justice and Tribal Affairs, and DoTCL (Department of Tirap, Changlang and Longding Affairs).
