Tripura to set up STF to tackle mafia syndicates

As per a Border Security Force (BSF) report, 369 people were arrested, including 59 Rohingya, 160 Indians, and 150 Bangladeshi nationals, in different operations in Tripura in 2022.

Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday conveyed greetings in the occasion of Dussehra and Vijaya Dasami and reiterated that his government is committed to ensuring safety and security of the people and improving general law and order situation of the state.

“We are considering setting up a Special Task Force (STF) to tackle mafia syndicates,” he said and added Tripura will soon have a dedicated cybercrime police station to handle crimes in cyberspace under the crime branch of state police.

Appreciating Tripura police, the Chief Minister attributed that Tripura’s crime rate is lowest among the states of the country, which has been possible because of the well-coordinated efforts of the security agencies. Expressing concern over drug menace, Saha said, “We are in the process of acquiring a drug scanning machine to detect narcotics entering the state.”

The Chief Minister said that as many as 1,417 personnel from two India Reserve battalions of Tripura State Rifles (TSR) have been recruited for the purpose and are presently undergoing training and among the total 1,417 recruits, 137 of them are women. Tripura government has zero tolerance for criminals and he personally keeps an eye on the situation.

On the issue of the drug menace and the government’s declared mission to achieve a drug-free state, a separate crime branch police station was set up, a public outreach programme Prayas launched, and 33 percent women reservation introduced in the force which included 137 women TSR personnel serving in the state’s counter-insurgency unit and other law and order duties.
