Shillong: The newly constituted Meghalaya State Education Commission (MSEC) on Thursday held its first meeting in which Chief Minister Conrad Sangma was also present.
The Education Commission is being headed by Prof. Sherwin May Sungoh of the Department of Education, North Eastern Hill University.
Former Union Public Service Commission Chairperson, Prof. David Reid Syiemlieh is the adviser academic and Tony TC Marak is the adviser, for school sector reforms while there are other members drawn from the state.
The terms of reference of the Commission are to advise the Meghalaya government on matters related to the school and college system, salary and school/colleges structures, school management functioning and accountability; recommend concrete solutions and strategic intervention and policy decisions for ushering reforms in the school and higher education system from the perspective of National Education Policy (NEP), 2020.
Expressing happiness about the commission getting on to its work, Sangma said the commission would try to find solutions to some of the problems the state education system is facing.
The Chief Minister also voiced optimism that the commission would do justice to the task it was entrusted with and said the government would look into the nitty gritty of the problems and come up with balanced and practical solutions.
“We hope the commission comes up with balanced and practical suggestions so that the state education system can transit smoothly from the current system,” Sangma said.
Some of the areas that the commission would work on are first to improve the overall quality of the education system in the state.
It would also look into aspects of teachers’ training and education. Then the commission would also try to find ways to rationalize school and colleges’ intake of teachers.
It has been found that in some schools and colleges in the state, the student-teacher ratio is not balanced with some having less while others are saturated.
Sangma said such aspects would be looked into and the commission would suggest how best to rationalize this important aspect.
The use of technology in the education system would also be worked upon and the commission would suggest to the government how some of the latest technologies could be implemented in the schools and colleges across the state.
Earlier, the Chief Minister inaugurated the office space of the MSEC at the Meghalaya Board of School Education office in Lower Lachumiere.
