New Delhi: The Congress said on Thursday that the assembly election results in Tripura, Meghalaya, and Nagaland were disappointing and that the party accepts the mandate.

The party, however, said the results of the by-elections held in various states are very encouraging for them.

“The election results are disappointing. We accept the mandate. We have to strengthen the organisation,” Congress MP Jairam Ramesh said at a press conference here, referring to the party’s dismal performance in the three NE states.

Talking about the Congress-CPI (M) alliance in Tripura, he said, “In Tripura, we were in a better position to form the government because we had an alliance, which we believed was a strong alliance. But the results have not proved our beliefs right.”

In Meghalaya, the parliamentarian said, “We were left with a vacuum after 21 of our MLAs were hijacked in Meghalaya. But, we contested all seats as we have to build for the future.”

In these states, we gave tickets keeping the future in mind, he said.

In response to a question, the MP said, “To say that our performance in the North Eastern states is because our national leaders did not campaign, in my opinion it is a wrong interpretation.”

Talking about the bye-election results in various states, including West Bengal, he said, “In West Bengal, bye-election results are encouraging for us. In Maharashtra, after 30 years, Congress has won in the RSS-BJP stronghold. In Tamil Nadu , our senior leader won by a huge margin . The results of the bye-elections are ‘sakaratmak’ (positive) for us.”
