Srinagar: Casualties are feared as a massive snow avalanche hit the tourist resort of snow bound Gulmarg in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, officials said.

They said several tourists are missing after the snow avalanche triggered near Afarwat hills at Hapath Khud in Gulmarg.

A rescue operation has been launched at the site. Police said the reports of some skiers being trapped are being corroborated.

“Rescue operation has been launched by Baramulla Police alongwith other agencies. Reports of some skiers being trapped are being corroborated,” a police statement said.

Kashmir received the season’s first major snowfall on Monday . The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) had on Tuesday warned of avalanche in Baramulla and several other districts of Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kupwara, Kulgam, Poonch and Reasi .
