Manipur’s ‘War on Drugs 2.0’ continues with seizures, poppy plantation destructions

Imphal: A team of Imphal East police arrested two individuals with a large amount of illegal drugs on Sunday.

Md. Abdul Salam, 47, of Lilong Yangbi Leikai, and Md. Wasim Akram alias Tete, 19, of Lilong Mairenkhul, were arrested during a random frisking and checking in Kiyamgei Thongkhong’s eastern side.

Eight plastic packets of brown sugar with a total weight of 8.11 kg (approximately), one autorickshaw (Bajaj RE) bearing registration number MN-01AL/9145, one backpack, a sum of Rs. 2730, one mobile phone, one AADHAR card, and one vehicle registration card were seized from their possession, said a police statement.

The arrested persons and the seized articles were handed over to the Irilbung Police Station for taking the necessary legal action. 

On the same day, a combined team of Kangpokpi district police, MPTC, 5 IRB, 7 MR, and Forest Department members led by SP/Kangpokpi destroyed illegal poppy plantations at Beleijang village hill, destroying approximately 52 acres, and at Khonomphai village hill, destroying 4 acres.

On Monday, a police party of Kakching police station seized 611 grams of suspected heroin No. 4 powder from one RE auto-rickshaw vehicle  (MN02B-24620) at Kakching Lamkhai during random frisking and checking. 

Henthiansang Haokip, 23, of Moreh Ward No. 7, and T. Robert Baite, 35, of Panglian Village, Singngat Sub-Division Churachandpur, who are currently residing in Moreh Chikiam Village, were also arrested.

The arrested persons, along with the autorickshaw driver and seized articles, were handed over to Kakching Police Station for taking up further necessary legal action, the press note from the PRO, Manipur Police, added.
