Kohima: The Nagaland People’s Action Committee (NPAC) over demand for solution of the Naga political issue has resolved to call for a six-hour bandh on January 14 from 6 AM to 12 noon.
A release issued by the NPAC, formed last year by apex tribe bodies and CSOs, stated that the decision to the effect was taken yesterday, on January 12, at a meeting of tribal bodies and civil organisation at Dimapur, to express resentment “over inordinate delay in delivering the long awaited Naga political solution as promised by Government of India.” It said that the meeting, attended by representatives of 14 Naga tribes of Nagaland, Nagaland Tribe Council, Nagaland Gaon Burhas (village headmen) Federation, Central Nagaland Tribes Council, Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) Nagaland, Ex-Parliamentarians’ Association of Nagaland, Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Senior Citizens’ Association Nagaland, political parties and other organisations, insisted on a solution before election of the state Assembly.
In the release the NPAC said that the bandh was called to convey “democratic resentment” to the Election Commission of India (ECI) team headed by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar that would arrive in the State to review poll preparedness for the forthcoming Nagaland Assembly election. It said every apex tribal Hoho and Civil Society Organisations had categorically made their stand clear that everyone was for a solution and not election. It said that on the present situation of Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO), it was different matter and that the committee understood its demand and respected the sentiment. The NPAC appealed to ENPO to join hands and extend solidarity by observing the bandh. It also urged the State Government and stakeholders to cooperate with NPAC in observing the bandh.
Meanwhile, the Angami Public Organisation (APO) has opposed the NPAC call for bandh which justified it on the ground that NPAC was not authorised to issue any directive on apex tribe bodies, according to a release.
