New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday told the Centre that interim appointments to the post of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director cannot go on.

Attorney General KK Venugopal, appearing on behalf of the Centre, told the bench of Justice L Nageswara Rao and Justice S Ravindra Bhat that the selection committee of the Prime Minister, Chief Justice, and Leader of Opposition will meet on May 2 to select the CBI director.

Senior counsel Prashant Bhushan, appearing on behalf of the non-governmental organisation Common Cause, alleged that the Centre was delaying a meeting of the high-powered selection committee as it “wants to bypass” Chief Justice SA Bobde, who will retire on April 23.

The AG denied the allegations pointing the committee meeting has been deferred till May 2 ahead of Assembly elections.

It has nothing to do with the retirement of the Chief Justice, he said.
