Two NHAI officials among five arrested by CBI in bribery case

The case relates to the allegations of extending favours to the said company by the public servants for processing and clearance of bills, the release of Bank Guarantees etc. in lieu of illegal gratifications.

Imphal: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested five people, including two public servants of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) posted in Assam’s Dispur and three employees, including the Executive Director of a private company based at Gurugram of Haryana in a bribery case.

The accused were identified as Dipak Das (Accounts Officer), Manoj Kumar (Junior Accounts Officer), both posted at Regional Office of NHAI, Dispur Guwahati; Sunil Kumar Agarwal (Executive Director); Pankaj and Dilip Rajput, all employees of a private company based at Gurugram, CBI said in a statement here.

A case was registered against Accounts Officer and Junior Accounts Officer, and others. The case relates to the allegations of extending favours to the said company by the public servants for processing and clearance of bills, release of Bank Guarantees in lieu of illegal gratifications.

It was further alleged that the said company had executed a contract of road widening in Meghalaya in 2018, for which discharge certificate was to be issued by NHAI after completion of four years of mandatory maintenance on March 31 this year.

It was alleged that the public servants and others had favoured the said private company in processing and clearance of final bills and getting bank guarantees of the private company lying with NHAI released as well as discharge certificate issued by NHAI, for which bribe amount was allegedly paid to the public servants, added the statement.

CBI laid a trap and caught both the public servants, while allegedly accepting bribe of Rs four lakh from an employee of the said private company on its behalf, who delivered the bribe in connivance with other employees. The employees of said private company were also caught.

Searches were conducted at around 15 places, including Guwahati, Bengaluru, Gurugram, Shillong and Patna at the premises of the accused, which led to recovery of incriminating materials and cash.
