Imphal: Manipur Congress leaders led by President K Meghachandra took out a procession to protest summoning of Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi by the Enforcement Directorate here on Monday.
Police did not allow the protest and a standoff ensued.
State Congress President Meghachandra said the ED summoned Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi without any reason. Congress will oppose such misuse of power to harass Congress leaders, he added.
He condemned the government for not allowing peaceful assembly of people to oppose the summon. The ED has been used as a private agency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he alleged.
It is unfortunate that government agencies have been used for personal and political reasons by the ruling party, he added. If the trend continues all democratic institutes in the country will vanish, he added.
He appealed to ED to act independently and questioned inaction of ED in various cases where corruption and irregularities were alleged and noticed.
The ED should treat all Indians equally and Congress will continue to fight to save the country, democracy and the Constitution, he said.
Congress members shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and displayed festoons and placards denouncing summoning of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi by ED in a National Herald case.
Former Speaker Th Lokeshwor said people should show Prime Minister Modi that he can’t do whatever he likes.Â
It is time to throw out such misrule using the power of the ballot , he said.
Congress spokesperson, Bhupenda Meitei said the BJP government was not allowing peaceful congregation of people in Manipur and other parts of the country.
