Kyiv: Russian forces destroyed the runway at the main airport in Ukraine’s Odesa in a missile attack, Al Jazeera reported on Sunday.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a videos address said the newly constructed runway in the strategic Black Sea port had been knocked out, while pledging to rebuild it.

Ukrainian officials said the missile was launched from the Crimean Peninsula which has been annexed by Russia and said the airport could no longer be used.

According to Maksym Marchenko, the governor of Odesa region, Russian forces had used a Bastion missile in the attack, while adding that the attack did not cause any casualties.

Gennadiy Trukhanov, the mayor of Odesa city, said it had taken 10 years to design and build the new runway, which was formally opened last July.
