Kabul: Share of Afghan asylum seekers request to Europe has seen a major rise, European Asylum Support Office (EASO) said.
According to Khaama News Agency latest statistics shows, there were 10,000 asylum applications by Afghans in August that reached 17,000 in September showing a 72 per cent rise.
For the past seven years, Syrians were at the top of the list of asylum seekers to Europe, however, since the Taliban takeover in Kabul, Syrian nationals have made 50 per cent lesser requests compared to Afghans.
In September, 71,200 asylum requests were made in the EU that is the highest number of applications since November 2016, according to an analysis released by EASO.
The rise in applications by Afghans to the EU also reflects evacuation operations by the Union after the Taliban takeover in mid-August.
The spike in asylum applications by Afghans to the EU comes amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the greatest economic collapse in the South Asian nation forcing over hundreds of thousand Afghans to leave their homeland one way or another.
