2 children injured as unexploded ordnance goes off in S Afghanistan

Kabul:Two children were injured as an exploded ordnance left over from past wars went off in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province on Wednesday, the state-run Bakhtar News Agency reported on Thursday.


A group of children found a toy-like device in the Jirnamo area of Nawa district on Wednesday and began playing with it, but the device suddenly exploded, critically injuring two children, the news agency reported.


A similar blast claimed the lives of two children and injured five others in the country’s northern Badakhshan province last week.


Afghanistan is reportedly one of the most mine-contaminated countries in the world, as a considerable number of people, mostly children, are killed and maimed every month due to blasts of unexploded devices left over from the past four decades of wars and civil conflicts.
