Agartala: The series of violence allegedly perpetrated by BJP cadres on opposition CPI-M since last evening in Khowai of West Tripura after the later party held a mega rally calling people to join hand against the misrule of BJP in the state triggered a reaction in the town while authorities deployed additional security personnel to defuse tension.

According to the report, at least 12 people have been injured and several shops, houses and vehicles were damaged in the attacks. The miscreants hurled petrol bombs in the house of CPI-M MLA Nirmal

Biswas at late night and damaged the boundary, however, none was hurt in the attacks.

Police said they have launched an investigation into the attacks and security has been stepped up in all the affected locations since last night following which miscreants retreated from the town. The BJP cadres have been accused of carrying out violence initially on Trinamool Congress leaders and later on the CPI-M.

However, as of now, police didn’t arrest anybody; instead, registered a suo-moto case against Trinamool general secretary and MP Abhishekh Banerjee and six other top leaders of the party. As part of their statewide programme against the ruling BJP to press for their 12 -points charter of demand, CPI-M had held a mega rally in Khowai yesterday afternoon. The rally was peaceful but trouble started when supporters were returning after the rally.

Allegedly, BJP miscreants attacked two CPI-M supporters – Swarup Sarkar(28) and Raju Rabidas at the Lalcherra area. In retaliation, CPI-M workers have damaged an under construction boundary wall of the party office of BJP in the area. Following the incident, a group of BJP armed with sticks and iron rods attacked CPM sub-divisional office and barged into the office.

Afterwards, unruly BJP workers from various parts of Khowai stormed the houses of CPI-M workers

and the attacks were continued till late at night. Finally, after the attack on the MLA house, police swung into action and chased them away but not detained anybody despite identifying them and not seizing the motorbikes left abounded in the area, alleged CPI-M leaders.

They alleged, “Following pressure from the Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, police have implicated false cases against Abhishekh Banerjee and TMC leaders though they had been attacked by the miscreants of BJP. The police are performing the partial role for BJP forgetting their mandated duty, which becomes the biggest challenge for the people of Tripura.”

Two more CPI-M workers were assaulted last night in Kamalpur of Dhalai district after former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and CPI-M state secretary Goutam Das had visited the area where veteran party leader Ranjit Ghosh (75) and others were attacked allegedly by BJP cadres and CPI-M party office was ransacked last week.
