11 Bangladeshi nationals arrested in Meghalaya

Shillong: Eleven Bangladeshi nationals travelling without valid travelling documents were arrested on Thursday along with three Indian nationals in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district, police said.

Initially, the Bangladeshi nationals were first “detained” by the Village Defence Party (VDP) of Kuliang village and the village durbar on suspicion grounds, police said, adding that the village secretary lodged an FIR against these illegal infiltrators.

Police also arrested the driver of the vehicle bearing registration number AS-12-Z-7069 Amal Kanti Das of the Assam’s Cachar district and two local perons John Patwad and Jingieit Suting of Kuliang village under East Jaintia Hills on charges of aiding and abetting the illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators.

The arrested Bangladeshi nationals, including five women have been identified as Mizanur Rahman, Arob Ali, Md. Hemail, Sapon Das, Haja Moin Uddin Sistya, Md. Rizwan, Hashina Begum, Husinara Begum, Ufla Khatun, Musamid Halima Begum and Chobra.

Police have informed that an FIR in this regard has been registered under the Foreigners Act and several sections of the IPC against the arrested persons.
