Agartala: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party candidates triumphed in two seats, including Bardowali from where Chief Minister Manik Saha coasted to victory, while the Congress wrested the prestigious Agartala constituency from the saffron outfit in Sunday’s vote count for the Tripura Assembly by-polls held recently.

The BJP seems to be heading for a big win in the remaining seat – Surma – too.

The Chief Minister, fighting his first direct elections, defeated his nearest rival Ashish Saha of the Congress in Bardowali.
Ashish Saha had won the seat in the 2018 Assembly polls but quit after crossing over to Congress.

In the Agartala seat, veteran politician and Congress leader Sudip Roybarman won comfortably over his BJP challenger Ashok Sinha. The Congress wrested the seat from the BJP, as Roybarman had won in 2018 on the saffron party’s ticket. However, he later switched allegiance to his old party Congress and tendered his resignation from the Assembly.

The saffron party’s candidate Malina Debnath won the race from Jubarajnagar in the North Tripura district, leaving behind CPI-M nominee Sailendra Chandra Nath. It was a setback for the CPI-M, which had won there four years back. The by-election was necessitated after the incumbent lawmaker Ramendra Chandra Debnath died earlier this year.

The detailed vote figures of each of the three constituencies were awaited.
In Surma, BJP’s Swapna Das has established a huge lead over Anjan Das of the CP.I-M. The by-poll was held in Surma as the sitting BJP MLA joined Trinamool and put in his papers.

The by-polls were held on June 23.
