Imphal: On Friday, June 5, on the occasion of World Environment Day, Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh reiterated the importance of preserving and protecting the environment saying that it can only save our human lives.
He maintained that natural disasters, global warming, climate change etc, are the repercussion of the destruction of nature and said we need nature more than it needs us.
On this day, Biren Singh along with other ministerial colleagues and officials planted trees at the Samadhis of Maharaja Gambhir Singh, Bir Tikendrajit Park and Rani Gaidinliu Park.
The Chief Minister stated that we must take necessary measures to save the earth and further informed that his government has already initiated ‘Green Manipur Mission’ to conserve and preserve the forest area of the State. Mass plantation drives are being taken up in various parts of the State, said Biren. On COVID-19, the Chief Minister also cautioned the public that the disease could spread anywhere and infect anyone if we do not take precautionary measures and obey the advisories, guidelines and protocols issued by WHO, Health Ministry and medical experts.
Stating that more than 35,000 natives have returned to the State from different parts of the country, Biren said the state government has taken up all precautionary and preventive measures to control the spread of COVID-19. He appreciated the efforts of frontline workers, CSOs, local volunteers in the fight against COVID-19. With the cooperation and support of the people, there has been no report of community transmission in the State, he added.
The Chief Minister also appealed to the returnees to obey the SOPs and guidelines issued by the government. He affirmed that collective responsibility and understanding can defeat the COVID-19.

Khan and others attended the function.
The State Level World Environment Day 2020 is organized by Directorate of Environment and Climate Change under the theme ‘Biodiversity’.
