Imphal: Former Minister and Langthabal MLA Karam Shyam handed over financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to one ailing journalist here on Sunday.

Akoijam Dhiraj, 45, who works for the Doordarshan Kendra, Imphal (DDK) as a stringer has been suffering from renal failure which needed urgent treatment.

Speaking to reporters, the lone LJP lawmaker said the value and hard work of media persons cannot be measured by money. They are the one who collects and disseminates information from dawn to dusk but 90 per cent of them are devoid of financial security.

Shyam said the monetary help he has extended to Dhiraj is just a token of love for media persons and in the hope that more people either from his own constituency, Langthbal, and other parts of the state would come forward to help the media persons.

In a very visible emotional outburst, Dhiraj was seen in tears. Shyam, who also appeared to hold back his tears, told the journalist: “You should not lose heart. Do not worry. I am there for you, will do whatever I can…do not have myopic politics, will standby for humanity, journalist…”
