Imphal: The Congress on Saturday announced candidates for the four Assembly constituencies in Manipur where bypolls are slated for November 7. However, the party is not likely to contest from the Singhat Assembly constituency due to certain political reasons, said a senior leader of the grand old party.
The party has fielded Salam Joy Singh from Wangoi, Md Azizul Haque Khan from Lilong, Moirangthem Hemanta Singh from Wangjing Tentha and Lamtinthang Haokip from Saitu seat as its candidates.
Last week, the ruling BJP had also announced candidates for the four Assembly constituencies except for Lilong. The four candidates are Oinam Lukhoi of Wangoi AC, Paonam Brojen of Wangjing Tentha AC, Ngamthang Haokip of Saitu AC and Ginsuhao alias GS Haopu of Singhat AC.
A former BJP Vice President, Salam Joy Singh joined Congress on September 23 last month. Interestingly, the seat for Wangoi AC became vacant after Congress MLA Oinam Lukhoi, a BJP candidate for the bypoll, joined BJP and later resigned from his post as an elected member.
Md Azizul Haque Khan contested the general election 2012 as an independent candidate, however, he stood second to Md Abdul Nasir of the INC.
Former minister and vice president of the BJP unit of BJP, Moirangthem Hemanta Singh, joined the opposition Congress on December 30, 2018. He will be contesting against Paonam Brojen Singh, an ex-Congress MLA who again recently joined the ruling camp in Delhi along with three others.
